CARL J. ZOST


CARL J. ZOST was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1896. He came to the Washington area in 1934 to work for the Navy Yard and retired from there in 1961 as a Civil Engineering Technician.

Being an enthusiastic bowler, Carl participated in leagues and tournaments all around the country. He recorded a high average of 185 in the 1961-62 season and had his high series of 685 in 1932 in Cincinnati. In the Pentagon City All Star Classic he rolled a 278 game with a 673 series. In addition to being in many leagues Carl has participated in ABC, National Tournaments, Virginia State, Journal American, Bowlers Journal and has missed only one of the 26 Annual City Tournaments. Since 1957 he has been a member of at least 10 league championship teams, the latest at Silver Hill where his team won 4 years consecutively.

Carl and his son owned and operated a bowlers Pro Shop where, for years, he assisted many bowlers in measuring and drilling their balls. His reputation is such that he still works part-time in a Pro Shop to assist bowlers in getting correct measurements.

He and his son sponsored many teams in the area under the name of Zost's Pro Shop. He also sponsored the Bowlers Victory Legion tickets and awarded prizes to ticket winners.

Carl served with distinction on the Board of Directors of the Association in the early years and was promoted to Vice President in 1955-56.

At the age of 75, he is still active in leagues. For the past 50 years Carl has been a great promoter of the game of bowling and has been honored for his great devotion by his election to the Hall of Fame.
