MARY KEARNS


Mary Kearns, a native of Shannandoah Valley. Va., has been in the Washington, D.C. area for 44 years—the same number of years she’s been wed to Richard “Mel” Kearns. They have five children and six and one-half grandchildren.

Mary has been bowling for 30 years, starting out in duckpin and tenpin leagues at Bowl America Falls Church. After five years,Mary gave up duckpins and bowled only tenpins.

Mary willingly accepted her appointment as a director to the Washington, D.C. Area Women's Bowling Association board in 1967. Since that time, she also has held the positions of assistant sergeant-at-arms, fifth vice president, and second vice president, her current post.

ln these various capacities, Mary has worked on nearly every committee on the board. Her current committees are Ways and Means, Special Projects, 50th Anniversary, and Awards Review. She attends all of WDCAWBA’s annual and semiannual meetings and spends endless hours with arts and crafts which are used for the open meetings as well as otherboard functions.

Mary gives freely of her time and talents to promote any board endeavor, including the planning activities to celebrate WDCAWBA’s 50th anniversary.

She's been a delegate to the state convention for 20 years and also has served as a credentials chairman. Mary also is a 23-time delegate to the WIBC Annual Meeting. In 1988, she won the WDCAWBA President’s Award for outstanding service.

Mary, who is currently sergeant-at-arms of the local 600 club, bowls in five leagues, with a high average of 180. Her bowling achievements include a 269 game, 688 series, and she twice has appeared in the WDCAWBA Top 10 rankings. She owns a WDCAWBA City Tournament Doubles title and has a second-place finish in the MWBPA Invitational Tournament.

For her untiring hours of dedication to the sport of bowling, a special spot has been reserved for Mary Kearns in the WDCAWBA Hall of Fame.
